On a recent trip to Maryland it was eye opening to see the effort put forth by various counties to make recycling easy. At least one county there actually supplies very attractive containers for recyclables along with calendars denoting what items get picked up on certain days. In fact, my parents, well into their 80s, recycle because it is easy.
Here in Pasco, the most glaring deterrent to the program is each home must actually purchase blue bags. True, it is a small price to pay. It might, however, discourage a number of people. Additionally, to recycle newspaper, a resident must drive to a drop off location.
Those who make the effort to be environmentally friendly and recycle are to be commended. The Pasco program, however, would have greater success with more "top of mind" awareness and an easier way for residents to participate.
