NEW PORT RICHEY - The human body, as well as the human face are viewed as pieces of artworks and have been the subject of artwork throughout the centuries.

Keeping in the mood of the fall season the Progress Energy Art Gallery's October and November exhibit will feature "Persona Obscura - The Dark Art of the Mask," an exhibit featuring masks by Sergio Vitoria Flores.

Two dates have been scheduled for the 6 - 9 p.m. First Friday Artist receptions, Oct. 3 and Nov. 7.

Flores is a 25 year-old artist who resides in New Port Richey and attends St. Petersburg College, where he is pursuing an arts degree.

"My work is motivated by words that I came across years ago; 'Truth, as only the humorist can know it, is expressed in his theater of the grotesque,' " Flores stated regarding his creations and quickly added that I have forgotten the author, but the words continue to inspire me.

The masks, which Flores handcrafts from plaster and gauze, are one-of-a-kind art pieces. The young artist molds his creations using a human face or a mannequin as starting points. He then modifies the facial features and seals them with a glossy or matte finish.

Approximately 25 original and distinctively different masks will be on display. Flores gives each mask a name.

The macabre-themed exhibit will be unlike any other the gallery has presented. Weird and grotesque paintings and drawings interspersed amongst Flores' masks will add to the atmosphere of the gallery.

On display through Nov. 29, the exhibit includes works of art by Patrick Stickney, Ron Walsh, Diana Flores, Jacob Reidt, Ian Appleby and Simon Pikous.

A Texas native, Flores is the event coordinator for Progress Energy Art Gallery and organized the exhibit and lends vocal talents to the Progress Energy Gallery's old-time radio play's which the gallery hosts during other events they participate within.

Flores will reprise his role as Jason, the narrator of the old-time plays. The next play, "The Return of Reginald Burton," by gallery member Ralph Annan, will be performed during their Halloween Party, 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25.
