In this country the word right has two meanings. One is right, as in the direction right. Then there is the second meaning, "being correct." It is a shame the right wing always thinks of it only in this latter sense.
The main difference between the politics of the right and left is this: Liberals may think they are correct but they do not attempt to stifle free speech. People on the right base their judgments on moral and religious principles. Therefore, they feel it is "correct" to pass laws that would keep others from behaving or speaking in a manner that they deem "immoral."
That in a nutshell is the big difference.
I and op-ed page columnist James Hibbs may call someone stupid, and ignorant. We would never, however, make laws to prevent someone from being stupid and ignorant.
That is the big difference between fascism and democracy – democracy as in democratic and Fascism as in theocracy and the Religious Right.
I am glad that The Suncoast News respects differing opinions and is willing to print them.
