OCALA - Pasco County Commissioner Pat Mulieri and her relatives were among an estimated crowd of 25,000 people at a steamy Sunday rally for Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin south of Ocala.

Mulieri said she and her and husband Jimmy joined her daughter and son-in-law, Caprice and Kenny Frosch, for what turned out to be one of the biggest political rallies in recent memory.

"Caprice had never been to a political rally," Mulieri wrote in an e-mail reply today. Mulieri is one of four Republicans on the Pasco County Commission.

Her daughter's reaction: "I saw my first vice presidential candidate in person and she was awesome."

Caprice snapped plenty of pictures and brought home signs, buttons and a T-shirt to share with her daughter, Kelly, who is an 11th-grader at Bishop McLaughlin High School, on Hays Road in the Shady Hills area.

It just so happens Kelly's class is studying politics, Mulieri related.

Mulieri shared her own impressions of the Palin rally in the e-mail. "The day was hot, the crowds were large and the signs 'Country First' were many. However, the sign of the day was 'Sweating for Sarah.' We did sweat. Jimmy, my husband, felt her speech was strong."

"I believed she connected with the people," Mulieri continued. "When she (Palin) said, 'were going to Washington to shake things up,' the crowd roared. I believe it may not be what she says but how she says it. Her emphasis on people first worked well with the crowd.

"Finally all cheered when 7-year-old Piper (Palin's daughter) stepped forward and said, 'Thank you for letting us come to Florida.' They had spent the day before in Disney" World.

"Finally, I am a Republican but I think it is great to see both parties have diversity on their ticket," Mulieri said.
