NEW PORT RICHEY - Five West Pasco Lutheran congregations are merging into a single church that will hold its first worship service Sunday, Oct. 5, church officials announced today.
The newly created Spirit of Grace Lutheran Church unites the former All Saints, First, Immanuel, Joyful Spirit and King of Glory Lutheran congregations.
"This is an exciting thing we're doing," the Rev. Jerry Nordsiek, pastor of the former Joyful Spirit Lutheran Church, said today.
Nordsiek is one of two lead pastors of Spirit of Grace church. The co-lead pastor is the Rev. Sally Cook, formerly pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
This is the first consolidation of its kind among congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, according to Nordsiek. With more than 10,000 congregations and 4.7 million members the Chicago-based ELCA is the largest U.S. Lutheran denomination.
The first Spirit of Grace Lutheran Church service will take place in the sanctuary of the former King of Glory Lutheran Church, at 4820 Floramar Terrace. There will be refreshments and fellowship following the worship service.
On Oct. 12, Spirit of Grace will then begin worshipping in its two permanent facilities – at the former All Saints Lutheran Church, at 9525 Hudson Ave., Hudson, and former Joyful Spirit Lutheran Church, 8812 Old C.R 54, in the Seven Springs area.
The other three church properties then will be sold.
