NEW PORT RICHEY - The Progress Energy Art Gallery has placed a call to movie producers for its inaugural Horror Shorts Film Festival.
The event at the downtown gallery will consist of a horror movie competition with the screening of the results of the contest at the gallery's Oct. 25 Halloween party.
The competition is open to everyone. Filmmakers must submit a DVD to the gallery with a completed entry form and entrance fee of $25 no later than 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
There is no limit to the number of entries an individual can submit. The films, however, must be original and not have won awards in any other competitions. The film length must not exceed 15 minutes and will not be returned to the filmmaker.
The movies must be of horror genre. A press release from the art gallery defines horror as "a theme intended to thrill viewers by provoking fear or revulsion through the depiction of grotesque, violent, or supernatural events."
One grand prize winner will be selected from the entries and will receive $100 cash prize, an award certificate and a complimentary gallery artist membership valued at $40. Two runners-up with receive award certificates and a complimentary gallery artist membership.
All judges' decisions will be final.
Download the application at www.nprgallery.com> and submit entries to the gallery at 6231 Grand Blvd., New Port Richey, FL. Mark the envelope containing the application, DVD and entrance fee with "2008 Horror Shorts Film Festival Entry."
Selected entries will be run in a loop during the gallery's Halloween party with the screening of the grand prize winner and runners up at 10 p.m. Prizes will be presented to the filmmakers at that time.
"Last year's Halloween party was such a smash that I was wondering how we were going to top it," said Karren Doll Tolliver, Progress Energy Art Gallery director. "Now, with the screening of the Horror Shorts Film Festival winner that night, I'm sure we will outdo ourselves. The film festival is an attempt to reach a group of artists (filmmakers) that the gallery hasn't attempted to reach so far."
Second Annual Halloween Costume Party
The costume party is for ticket holders only and are on sale at the gallery or via their Web site and cost $25 each, couples are $40 with advance purchase or $30 each and $50 for couples at the door.
Times for the party 8 - 11 p.m.
An old-time radio play, "The Return of Reginald Burton," by Ralph Annan will be performed live at the gallery at 9 p.m. Food and drinks by Cafe Grand are included in the ticket price.
The gallery will hold a drawing with prizes including a gallery bottle of wine, coupons from local merchants and other surprises. A costume contest will be held as well.
Artist exhibit will include the "Dark Arts" by Sergio Vitorio Flores. The exhibit will feature masks by Flores, a young artist who lives in New Port Richey.
Costumes are mandatory.

The Progress Energy Art Gallery is a community gallery that was opened by the not-for-profit organization Greater New Port Richey Main Street. The gallery received a grant from utility Progress Energy Florida to encourage the growth of downtown art and culture.
