A New Port Richey couple with a love of both classic rock and Elvis have made a name for themselves on the area fraternal organization circuit.
Performing as Joel and Lynn, Joel and Lynn Stone are regulars at the Eagles Aerie in New Port Richey and the American Legion in Holiday. Additionally, on Saturday, Sept. 20, they will bring their act to a sock hop at Tarpon Springs Moose Lodge, which in spite of its name is in Holiday.
Although the act is called Joel and Lynn, most of the performance comes from Joel. Although she occasionally sings numbers such as "These Boots Were Made for Walking," most of the time Lynn stays in the background running the sound equipment.
Joel is the focus of the entertainment, alternately favoring classic rock oldies and appearing as Elvis in one of three bejeweled Elvis jumpsuits. A fourth suit is on the way, Joel said, made by a company that created some of the King's costumes.
"I try to give him a nice tribute," he said. "I put on a show. A lot of people think my voice sounds like him."
He also occasionally appears in white shirt, fedora, sunglasses and skinny tie as one of the Blues Brothers.
"I get the crowd going," he said. "I give them sunglasses and fedoras. I get them bopping and hopping and dancing all over the place."
He also fires up his audience when performing as himself. During a recent performance at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in New Port Richey, Joel took his act offstage moving close to his audience while singing such oldies as "My Girl" and "Kansas City."
Moving around both keeps audience members interested and establishes a connection with them, he said later.
Joel has been singing since childhood in Rockford, Ill. "I'm the oldest of nine kids, and every one of us can sing," he said.
He even played the drums in a band with his father and grandfather, the first of numerous bands in which he performed, mostly as a singer.
He is now singing some of the songs he performed with bands in his earlier days. "I like that music," he said. "That's what I heard when I was a kid."
