NEW PORT RICHEY - An annual memorial ceremony to honor the victims of the Sept. 11 tragedy is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at Sims Park.
With prayer led by local clergy and patriotic music by the Richey Concert Band and choral groups from local schools, the ceremony is designed as an opportunity for the community to reflect and remember the victims and their families.
"It is important for our community to remember the victims of this tragedy and to teach our youth about the importance of honoring the sacrifices of those who have lost their lives in defense of our freedom," said Pasco School Superintendent Heather Fiorentino, chairwoman of the committee organizing the event.
The keynote speakers this year will be Patrick Campbell and Steve Papola, retired New York City police officers who were involved in the response to the 9/11 attack in lower Manhattan.
In conjunction with the memorial service, contributions will be accepted for "Operation Shoebox". Founded in 2003, Operation Shoebox sends snacks and much needed personal care items to troops deployed overseas, along with a fresh supply of morale in each package.
Donations of items such as hard candy, canned food, all kinds of toiletries, small board games and crossword puzzles are sought.
Tapping into the spirit of giving, Florida Blood Services will be at Sims Park 4 - 8 p.m. taking blood donations.
