NEW PORT RICHEY - It's going to be a rough couple days to be a fish in the Pithlachascotee River fish come Sept. 13 and 20, but anglers of all ages are invited to join in the YMCA's 6th Annual Kids Fishing Festival and following Cotee River Flats Classic.

The youth event will be Sept. 13 at Sims Park and is split into two, hour-long time slots - 9:45 a.m. and 11 a.m. There is a maximum of 200 youngsters per session, said YMCA special events coordinator Melissa Cameron, and everyone will fish from the seawall.

Either session charges a $10 registration fee that will include the child's rod and reel, tackle box, bait, T-shirt, lunch and other activities.

The event is a catch-and-release tournament and it benefits the YMCA's Open Doors program. Through Open Doors the YMCA provides memberships and other programs to individuals throughout the community that cannot financially afford them on their own.

The more seasoned angler's turn to bait up the hooks will come the week following, on Sept. 20, during the Cotee River Flats Classic.

Registration is $60 per participant and the lines will hit the water promptly at 6:30 a.m. Anglers may fish from the shore or boat.

It, too, is a catch-and-release tournament and the targeted fish species are snook, redfish and trout.

Prizes of $350, $150 and $75 will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners, respectively, for all three species.

Along with a tournament entry, the $60 registration fee also includes a ticket to the Captain's Meeting and Party held Sept. 18 at the Crab Shack Tiki Bar and Grill on U.S. 19. Additional tickets to the party cost $25.

Along with being one of the most popular groupings of events for the YMCA over the past six years - the Captain's Party, Kids Tournament and the Classic - they are also the biggest fundraising events for the organization as well, Cameron said.
