To the average family it's not something given much thought.
People go about their daily lives oftentimes oblivious to the plight taking place in Pasco County.
However, with the hard work by members of The Coalition for the Homeless of Pasco County, this troubling situation will receive the attention it needs.
According to the latest figures there are more than 4,000 homeless people in Pasco. More than 35 percent of those homeless are children, which is tragic.
Even worse is that more than 2,500 people have no shelter at all, which means they are living in the woods or under bridges.
These are eye-popping numbers that require our immediate attention.
The Coalition of the Homeless of Pasco County deserves credit for tackling the homeless problem head on.
Coalition members want to develop a 10-year plan to combat homelessness in the county.
A big step was taken this week when coalition members met with Pasco County commissioners to address the disturbing numbers.
If any workable solution for the homeless situation is going to be developed the entire community will need to be on board, which includes county government.
To their credit county officials were quick to pledge their support to help devise a 10-year plan.
The next step is to get other government and nonprofit agencies to take up the cause.
We all need to participate in this worthwhile endeavor.
If we don't act now the problem is only going to get worse in the years to come.
