Salvation Army starts Christmas food drive

Published: October 25, 2008

PORT RICHEY - A tough economy might make the holidays less than happy for cash-strapped Pasco families. Salvation Army officials anticipate more people will need help this Christmas.

Almost 400 food boxes were distributed last December, according to Jeanne Coulter, manager of the Center of Hope of Salvation Army West Pasco.

This December, Coulter expects 525 holiday food boxes need to be filled. Some families with children age 12 or younger can get toys.

"There are so many people coming to us for food," Coulter said.

Benefactors can donate canned goods, hams and other items for the food boxes, or donate money to help fill each box, which will contain about $30 worth of food.

Some suggestions to feed a family of four include a 3-pound canned ham or uncooked 10- to 15-pound turkey. Other items typically include stuffing mix, canned or powder gravy, cranberry sauce, canned fruit, yams and sweet potatoes, instant potatoes, macaroni and cheese, corn and green beans.

Needy Pasco residents can begin applying Monday, Oct. 27, for help through the Christmas Assistance Program. The deadline for applications will be Nov. 15.

Applicants must supply identification, proof of income and proof of residency in Pasco to be eligible for the help.

Applicants must fill out a form at the Center of Hope, 8040 Washington St., Port Richey, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

For information, call Coulter at 727-847-6321, ext. 223.
