Published: October 22, 2008

There are two qualified candidates running to replace the retiring Pasco County Clerk of Circuit Court. It won't be easy for either candidate to fill the shoes of Jed Pittman, who's been in office for more than three decades.

Both candidates, Republican Paula O'Neil and Democrat Robert Altman have performed well during recent political forums.

Altman, 52, a New Port Richey civil attorney, has practiced law on the Suncoast for almost 30 years. He is no newcomer to the political scene, having been defeated by Jed Pittman in the 2004 general election. Altman is a respected lawyer in the community who believes his experience and familiarity with the clerk's office makes him qualified to be the next clerk of circuit court. He cites his experience with the real property, probate and trust law section of the Florida Bar as the main experience that would prepare him for the office.

He advocates opening an office in Central Pasco and placing deputy clerks in the Tax Collector's Office locations when economically feasible. He wants to expand office hours and hire more bilingual employees.

O'Neil, 52, of Bayonet Point, comes to the table having worked in the clerk's office for five years, the last two as chief deputy.

With Pittman suffering from health problems, O'Neil has been credited with running the daily operation of the office and its 400-plus workers.

In an office with responsibilities ranging from recording official documents and court records to conducting audits and collecting fines experience is needed.

Under O'Neil's guidance the clerk's office has slowly transformed from its antiquated ways to an easier-to-use, state-of-the-art system. She spearheaded the transfer of more than 9 million pages of official documents online. The office was the fourth in the state to accept electronic court filings. Motorists who receive traffic citations can pay their fines online. With more than 20 years of government experience she has positioned herself well to seamlessly take the reins from Pittman. The Suncoast News recommends Paula O'Neil for Pasco clerk of the circuit court.
