Boys' Golf Teams Gearing Up For Regionals

Published: October 18, 2008

EAST LAKE - Only two teams will be left swinging after Monday's Class 2A, Region 4 golf tournament at Wentworth Golf Club, where three local fivesomes are hoping to put their games together for a state-title run.

Last Monday's District 2A-12 champs from Dunedin High defended last year's crown by mowing down the competition by 17 strokes. Led by Justin Foster's even-par 72 at districts, the Falcons now look poised to keep momentum rolling in their favor and grab one of the two coveted state tournament invites.

"I wanted to win districts, for sure, because it's my senior year," Foster said. "In regionals, I'm just going to play as best I can and hope the team does well."

"District championships are nice," Richard Edmonds, Dunedin's first-year golf coach, said. "But we would really like to go to states. That would cap our season off."

The Falcons performed below expectations in last year's regional tournament, at Fox Hollow Golf Club. Edmonds, however, said his golfers now have a better understanding of how they measure up with other competitors and what it takes to advance. Foster, Travis Huston, Mark Bernard and Westin Jensen are all back for another go.

"What it is is these kids are learning how to play team golf and be more mature now," Edmonds said.

Two other area programs - both of which fell to the Falcons in districts - will also be contending alongside Dunedin for an Oct. 28-29 trip to Davenport: East Lake and Mitchell.

After losing a number of contributors from 2007's regional runners-up, the Eagles managed to place second at districts Monday. Logan Hand, Terry O'Reilly and freshman Dustin Dingus are all threats to post in the mid-to-low-70s on any given day.

"We've had an up and down year," East Lake Coach Terry O'Reilly said. "I think we're just now getting healthy and where we need to be to compete."
