Hudson Gets Second Straight Win

NEW PORT RICHEY - The Hudson High defense worked a bend-but-don't- break scheme Thursday night at River Ridge and managed to post its first shutout of the season, leading the way to a 14-0 Cobra victory.

"They played well. It wasn't lights-out, but I'm happy with the play that we got on defense," said Hudson head coach Mark Nash afterward.

Also pleasing Nash was his team's quick, first-half start. It was only the second time in six games the Cobras managed to light the scoreboard in the first quarter, doing so when running back Dylan Luke ran in from 5 yards out on Hudson's initial drive.

"We've been playing flat in the first half for whatever reason," Nash said. "We talked about it a lot over the week and they came out in the first half and played."

In a slight reversal of fortune, Hudson (3-3) subsequently went scoreless later in the second half.

"We need to be able to put four quarters together or we're not going to beat the better teams."

After taking the 7-0 lead, the Royal Knight running game – with primary duties split between Stavros Arianas and Trevor Shoun – began to march again, but stalled out at the Cobra 48-yard line.

Hudson then scored their second, and last, touchdown of the game on their second possession, this time through the air. Quarterback Zack Wynn connected with No. 1 receiver Dylan Buono for an 18-yard score. A 2-point conversion run made the score 14-0.

Wynn finished with a relatively quiet night by his lofty standards, throwing for 164 yards on 17-for-27 passing, one touchdown and one late-game interception.

Arianas and Shoun combined for the majority of River Ridge's 136 yards on the ground.

It was another relatively solid performance all around by the Royal Knights (0-6), but they still remain searching for their first win this season. They will play host to Springstead (5-1) next Friday night.

Up next for Hudson is one of Coach Nash's aforementioned "better teams" the Cobras will face, undefeated Gulf High (6-0). The game will be played Saturday night at Gulf to accommodate for the Buccaneers' Alumni Invasion weekend.
