Hospice Thrift Store Marking Fifth Anniversary

Published: October 11, 2008

NEW PORT RICHEY - The Hospice Thrift Store & More will celebrate its fifth anniversary Monday by raising funds for Hernando-Pasco Hospice while providing bargains to shoppers.

Since the store opened in 2003, more than 468,000 items have been sold with the income directly supporting HPH's patient and family care programs, Shirley Skinner, store operations manager, reports.

"Our store has welcomed about 170,000 customers and we are grateful to our customers, the community, donors and our loyal volunteers," Skinner said in a press release.

In May 2007, the thrift store moved from its original location, in East Richey Square, to a larger space within the same shopping center on Massachusetts Avenue at Congress Street.

"The newer space has more room for donations and provides a pleasant, small department store shopping experience for customers," Skinner said.

Merchandise changes daily, but boutique business, everyday and casual clothing for adults and children are always available as well as party dresses and wedding supplies, furniture, collectibles, books, accessories, holiday and household items.

Monday's celebration will include sales, prizes and cake for shoppers. The event will take place from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. at the store, 6528 Massachusetts Ave.

Cake will be served from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., or while it lasts. Hourly door prize drawings are planned from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The thrift store supports HPH programs in Pasco, Hernando and Citrus counties, HPH spokeswoman Jane Freeman explains. HPH provides care, comfort and support to individuals and their families who are affected by a life-limiting illness regardless of ability to pay.

In addition to providing care in private residences, HPH has five Hospice Care Centers and four Hospice Houses, more than any hospice in the area.

Free pickup of large and bulky items can be arranged by calling the store at 727-841-7356. Donations of smaller items can be dropped off from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. weekdays and 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays.

For more information about the thrift store check the Hernando-Pasco Hospice href=http://www.hphospice.org> Web site or call 727-841-7356.
