Published: October 8, 2008

PORT RICHEY - Some spooky sightings already have been reported at Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park, where volunteers are preparing for the annual Halloween in the Woods event.

A pirate ship and a giant bat are taking shape as crews from the Salt Springs Alliance park volunteer group construct things that will go bump in the night Oct. 24 and 25.

"This year it promises to be bigger and better with the addition of several new activities," Linda Tracey, president of the alliance, said about the 2008 version of Halloween in the Woods. Volunteers began in earnest constructing sets last Saturday, Oct. 4.

Returning from previous years will be kiddie games, hayrides, pony rides, lots of candy and the Kiddie Trail. An expanded "Spooky Trail" is sure to raise a few hairs on the back of necks. Face painting will be available. A helicopter flight simulator is planned.

The Costume Contest, for children 12 and younger, will start at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25. Local dignitaries will be the judges, Tracey explains. First, second and third place prizes will be given for best costume in two age groups, 7 years and under and 8 to 12 year olds.

For the adventurous, two night runs through the woods are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 24. At 11 p.m. the 1-mile "Night Owl Classic" run will begin.

Midnight marks the start of the "5K Creature Feature." Headlamps or flashlights will be required for each runner. Registration for this event costs $15, or $12 with the early registration discount before Oct. 17.

Halloween in the Woods will be 6 - 10 p.m. both nights at the state park on Salt Springs Road behind the Sears in the Gulf View Square mall. General admission will cost $2 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under. There are small additional fees for some games, food and rides. No fee or registration to enter the Costume Contest.
