Petco Opens Port Richey Store

PORT RICHEY - Some tails will be wagging at the thought of the new PETCO store in Port Richey.

A three-day celebration will begin Oct. 10, featuring pet adoptions and a variety of activities at the store at 9638 U.S. 19, according to Ryan May, a company spokesman. Call 727-847-9140 or go to PETCO's href=http://www.petco.com> Web site for more information.

Highlights on Friday, Oct. 10, include the Most Photogenic Pet contest.

The ribbon cutting is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 11, with $10 gift cards for the first 100 customers who sign up for PETCO's membership program PALS, or PETCO Animal Lovers Save.

Other events include free pet caricatures for all customers.

Biggest and Smallest Dog Contest, Best Dressed, and Pet/Owner Look-Alike Contest are planned for Sunday, Oct. 12.

Companion animals will be available for adoption throughout the weekend, with all new pet parents receiving an Adoption Gift Booklet with up to $225 in savings on PETCO products and services. To receive the booklet, new pet parents can bring their adoption papers to any PETCO location.

Founded in 1965, the retailer operates more than 900 stores in 50 states and the District of Columbia. The chain is opening 20 more locations across the country in October.

A nonprofit organization, PETCO Foundation, has raised more than $41 million to aid animals. The firm works with 5,000 local animal welfare groups to help find homes for more than 200,000 adoptable animals every year.

The Port Richey store used to be part of the former Wal-Mart store in Embassy Crossing across from the Gulf View Square mall.

The shopping center also became home for a Bed, Bath and Beyond and Michael's in recent years, along with long-time tenants such as Sports Authority and Books-A-Million. Gumberg Asset Management Corp., based in Fort Lauderdale, operates the center.
