Hart's One Stop, 727-938-5364: A lot of redfish have been caught along the shallows west of the Anclote power plant. Fish have been in the mangroves and on oyster bars, taking live shrimp, pinfish and Berkley Gulp Strips on jigs. Most fish caught have been oversized, but there have been a few 20 to 27 inches landed. The better bite has been early and late in the day. Two anglers fishing just off the power plant outfall canal caught a pair of cobia 34 and 44 inches. Both took live pinfish free-lined. The grass bottom off the canal has been a good spot for trout, with fish to 18 inches common and a few to 20 inches or better. Live shrimp, sardines and Gulp Strips in root-beer color have been good baits. The bite has been better nearing dark. A few pompano were being caught at the Anclote Gulf Park pier. Doc's Goofy Jigs tipped with shrimp and Silly Willy banana jigs have been taking fish to 15 inches. A few small permit have been caught, as well. Snook have been taken around the Alt. 19 bridge on the Anclote River. Fish to almost 40 inches have been caught, with some slot-sized fish reported. Live jumbo shrimp and pinfish have been top baits when free-lined in the current.
Denny B's Bait and Tackle, 813-885-9811: Anglers have been scoring trout on the grass bottom in Mobbly Bay, in Oldsmar, taking shorts and some slot fish on jigs and live shrimp. Crystal Beach shorelines, around mangroves and bars have been producing some reds of keeper size. The spoil islands along the Intracoastal are another place to focus. Reds and some snook have been taken around them recently, including at Three Rooker Bar, near Fred Howard Park.
Pier 60, 727-462-6466: A good number of pompano have been taken in recent days. Fish have been running 13 to 15 inches and taking Doc's Goofy Jigs tipped with shrimp. Silly Willy jigs have been working as well, with yellow and white the top colors for both lures. Mackerel have been running and there have been schools of bluefish moving by. Macks to 20 inches have been taken on live shrimp, greenbacks, Gotcha Plugs and Clark's silver spoons. The blues have been running to about 2 pounds. Snook have been a good bet at night. Fish in the slot range have been rare, with a lot of shorts and some oversized landed. Live shrimp, ladyfish and pinfish have the top baits.
Redington Long Pier, 727-391-9398: A lot of snook are being taken at night. Fish have been running undersized, but providing some good action. Live shrimp, pinfish and small ladyfish have been good baits among naturals, with topwater plugs taking a few. Flounder have been running well. Fish to 20 inches have been taking jigs tipped with shrimp or weighted shrimp on the bottom around sandy patches. This year has been one of the strongest flounder bites in memory. The redfish action has slowed some. A few fish of slot-size were reported, but most landed have been too big to keep, at 30 inches or better. Live pinfish and shrimp fished on the bottom has been doing the trick. The bite has been better at night.
