In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month PHCC Alric C.T. Pottberg Library Gallery is presenting "Expressions of a Cancer Journey."
The exhibit will feature selected works from the "Lilly Oncology on Canvas" collection, which was developed by pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly in 2004. It was originally titled "Oncology on Canvas: Expressions of a Women's Cancer Journey." It was formed to help people living with cancer cope with the emotional impact and journey they embark when confronted with a cancer diagnosis.
The idea was simple. Lilly wanted to give treatment beyond drug discovery and development. Subsequently, "Oncology on Canvas" was born giving those affected a creative outlet to express the emotional side effects of the disease.
An opening reception for the exhibit sponsored by Lilly Oncology and Florida Cancer Institute-New Hope will take place from 3 - 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9.
The biennial competition invites people diagnosed with cancer, their families, friends, caregivers and healthcare providers to express through art and narrative, the life-affirming changes that give their illness and recovery meaning.
The collection of artwork illustrates the universal range of emotions of the journey with cancer, such as fear, hope, sorrow, relief and courage and allows the viewer to reflect on the individual journey of individuals stricken by cancer.
The traveling display of artwork will consist of an undisclosed number of artwork ranging from oils, acrylics, watercolor and photography. A narrative will accompany each piece explaining the history behind the artworks development
More than 2000 pieces of art was received for their 2006 competition with submissions coming from 43 different countries.
The PHCC Gallery is in the Alric Pottberg C.T. Library, at Pasco-Hernando Community College West Campus, 10230 Ridge Road. Viewing hours at the gallery are from 8 a.m. until 9 pm. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The exhibit will end Nov. 8.
