Published: November 26, 2008

NEW PORT RICHEY - In the wake of the tragedy from the recent T.J. Maxx purse snatching, the Sheriff's Office urges shoppers to use caution to guard against thieves and robbers during the rush of post-Thanksgiving holiday sales.

On Nov. 12, Linda Roma resisted a man trying to snatch her purse as she and her daughter left the T.J. Maxx store at 12209 U.S. 19 in Hudson. Roma fell backward, struck her head on the pavement and died the next day from head injuries.

Steven Anthony Cruz, 38, of Hudson remains in jail without bail on a first-degree murder charge in the case. His girlfriend, Lisa Michelle Dillard, 39, Hudson, faces one count of being an accessory to strong-arm robbery.

"The holiday season is a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft during their shopping," according to the Sheriff's Office crime prevention unit advisory.

"Unfortunately, there are criminals who use the holidays to target victims who may be distracted by the busy season."

Shoppers should strive to shop during daylight hours, officials urge. If shopping at night, go with a friend or family member.

Sheriff's Office recommends

• Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.

• Only carry enough cash, checks or credit cards for purchases. Pay with a check or credit card when possible.

• Keep cash in a front pocket.

• Stay alert to surroundings.

• Notify the company immediately if a credit card is lost, stolen or misused.

• Keep a record of all credit card numbers in a safe place at home.

• Be extra careful if carrying a wallet or purse which criminals target. Do not get hurt fighting a purse snatcher.

• Beware of strangers approaching for any reason since con artists might try various methods of distraction.

• Avoid driving alone or at night.

• Keep all car doors locked and windows closed while in or out of your car. Set the car alarm or anti-theft device.

• Park in well-lighted areas at night and as close to the store as possible.

• Avoid parking next to vans, trucks with camper shells or cars with tinted windows.

• Never leave the car unoccupied with the motor running or with children inside.

• Don't leave packages or valuables on the seat of the car. Put them in the trunk or at least out of sight.

• Have your keys ready before heading to the car. Don't fumble for keys when approaching the car.

• Don't approach your car alone if suspicious people are in the areas. Ask mall or store security for an escort.
