The situation in our auto industry, much to the chagrin of auto workers, was brought on by the shortsightedness of the car manufacturers. Anybody who has a bit of common sense can see this. There are, however, some who say don't help the auto workers, they are union people and they deserve what they get because they saddled the companies with high labor and retiree costs.
This sounds exactly like the Republicans in Washington, who are standing against any help for the industry. It matters not that millions of Americans will suffer from lost jobs, retirement and their homes.
The Republicans want to classify it as a bailout, when it really is a loan. Chrysler had a similar situation in 1979 and the government loaned them the money that was paid back in 4 years. This loan could have stipulations in it to guarantee that the money will be repaid.
Don't let Republican columnists put their spin on a plan to help all Americans. We are trying to dig out of the hole they placed us. Stifling a plan to help do just that would play into the hands of those wanting to maintain this condition until 2010 and 2012.
