Lutz Motorcyclist Dies In State Road 54 Collision

A 37-year-old man died Tuesday night when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on State Road 54 in Pasco County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Steven C. Hammonds of Lutz died at the scene just west of Magnolia Boulevard, troopers say.

This is what happened about 6:35 p.m., according to the patrol:

Hammonds was riding a 2000 Harley-Davidson motorcycle west on S.R. 54 and swerved into the eastbound lane for unknown reasons. The motorcycle went into the path of a 2004 Ford pickup truck driven by Robert Diamond of Wesley Chapel.

The front of the truck struck the side of the motorcycle, and Hammonds was thrown off. A 2007 Nissan that was driving behind Hammonds then collided with the motorcycle.

Diamond, 58, was not hurt. The driver and the passenger of the Nissan received minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

The crash is under investigation.
