Hot Corner: BCS Changes? Don't Bet On It

The Hot Corner

Published: November 23, 2008

The upcoming leader of the free world has spoken – albeit mildly – on behalf of a college football playoff system.

Not two weeks removed from President-elect Barak Obama's historic victory at the polls, he has conveyed that part of "Change We Can Believe In" may involve alterations regarding the Bowl Championship Series' miserable shortcomings and deficiencies.

What's the problem with that? Nothing really. It certainly wouldn't be the first time a president and its government has stepped into the fray on the topic of sport. Heck, only three years ago we had bumbling, performance-enhanced boobs giving testimonies on Capital Hill about steroid use in baseball.

Que, Mr. Sosa?

Granted, both are vastly different scenarios. One deals with illegal matters, the other matters in cutting big deals. (As far as I know, nothing the BCS oversight committee has done thus far is illegal – but I could be wrong).

The problem that I am seeing with Obama's words are just how seriously people seem to be taking them; like he has placed the BCS mess up there with the wars in the Middle East and the still drooping domestic economy.

Maybe it's his inspirational speaking skills striking yet again, but playoff proponents are certainly abuzz.

The main, general misconception about this is that people are acting as though Obama is speaking 'out' about college football when he is merely speaking 'about' college football.

Here's what I mean. The President-elect is not calling news conferences or shifting topic during "60 Minutes" or "Monday Night Football" interviews to speak up on the issue of playoffs. He is simply being asked a question and then voicing his personal opinion.

Cool down.

Those expecting to hear about a letter emblazoned with the presidential seal on BCS Presidential Oversight Committee chairman David Frohnmayer's desk soon after Jan. 20 need to hope for a more realistic dream to come true.

In fact, after hearing Frohnmayer's response to Obama's thoughts, I am even more convinced now that a systematic change will be coming well later rather than sooner.

Anyway, what decent minded soul would wish for the new guy to add that piling heap on top of his already overflowing plate?

The man's inheriting two ugly wars the moment he takes command...don't hold your breath for him engage in a third.
