As we are going through this energy and unemployment crisis it may be good to go back to something that worked very well in the past.
The railroad is a highly energy efficient transportation system and it is well suited for the use of coal as its fuel. We have plenty of coal reserves. Building new steam locomotives and mining more coal would really get the economy going. Time tested positive results could be expected.
This would save a lot of fuel oil for other purposes, relieve truck traffic on the highways and reduce the wear and tear caused by heavy traffic on pavement and bridges.
