The new season of the Richey Community Orchestra will swing into gear with a tribute to two trend-setting female trios that set the musical pace in earlier times.
"Sensational Sisters" features Michele James and the Swing Sisters and pays tribute to the Andrews Sisters and the McGuire Sisters.
The group re-creates the look and sound of the famed sister acts. The Andrews Sisters were the most popular female group during a time when jitterbug was king and World War II raged. Their hits included "Beer Barrel Polka," "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree."
Michele James and the Swing Sisters also perform the McGuire Sisters' signature songs, "Sugartime" and "Sincerely." The sisters hit the musical scene in 1952 and had a long career that included performing for five U.S. Presidents and England's Queen Elizabeth II.
"It was music at a time when the words meant something," Michele James said, speaking of the time when the sister acts were popular. James has performed with stars such as Robert Goulet and Shirley Jones and with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra.
Other members of the Swing Sisters are Cathy Baudrit and Kim Kollar. Baudrit is an elementary school teacher in Bradenton and Kollar an actor with Venice Little Theater, in Venice, Fla.
The Sisters will wear the clothing that was popular during the Andrews Sisters time. For the first act, they will wear two-piece suits and T-strap shoes. Later, they will appear in military uniforms.
The 50-piece Richey Community Orchestra will accompany the trio, recreating the sound of the big band eras, in which the sister acts were popular.
Additionally, Karl Beaudry and Robert Boyd will conduct the orchestra in a musical tribute to Duke Ellington. The orchestra will also play selections from "My Fair Lady," "Funny Girl" and "Hello, Dolly!"
The show will mark James and The Swing Sisters' sixth appearance with the orchestra. "People say the show brings back so many memories," said James.
Audience members often sing along, resurrecting words to songs they thought they had long forgotten. "It's just a fun, happy experience," she said.
