HOLIDAY - A sailor at heart and possessing a passion for water, Arlene Richardson expresses her nautical interests through her oil paintings. Richardson, a native of New England, now has a winter home in West Pasco.
The Pasco Arts Council is presenting "Coastal Connections," an exhibit of her work. An opening artist reception will be held 5 - 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at The Arts Center.
The Arts Center, 5744 Moog Road, is the home of the Pasco Arts Council and its gallery and education center.
On the water
The Richardson exhibit will present the artist's reflections on living on the water. Richardson grew up in a boatyard on the Merrimack River, near Newburyport, Mass. She began studying oil painting at 16.
Later, while residing in the coastal town of Hampton, N.H., Richardson and husband Ken, a firefighter, operated a commercial fishing boat.
Richardson began painting again after the birth of her daughter. She studied with Robert Scott Jackson. Jackson, a Newbury native, is a holder of the Copley Master designation from the Copley Society of Boston.
Impressionable
Jackson's landscapes are characterized by an Impressionistic pallet and his simple yet powerful use of color, which represents light and how it affects the scene.
Like Jackson, Richardson's work enhances the reflection of light that draws the viewer into the depth of finished work adding space and intensity through bright colors.
After selling the family fishing boat, the couple missed being on the water and took up sailing. They spent most of their free time during the summer sailing the coast of Maine.
As Richardson recalls: "Painting on board a boat was a bit challenging while trying to have my work reflect the things we enjoyed so much - sitting at anchor in a small cove, enjoying a sunset, watching the fog rolling in or seeing storm clouds building in the distance."
After retiring, the Richardsons sold their home in New Hampshire and moved to a family cottage on the salt marshes surrounding Newbury. The couple spends their summers there.
An accomplished painter, Richardson has been studying the Gulf Coast of Florida since she and Ken purchased a winter home in New Port Richey. Sailboat number four resides in the canal behind the home.
Richardson continues to paint in both locales.
An introduction
This exhibit at The Arts Center will be her first introduction into the Florida art scene. The exhibit of 20 or so pieces is a mixture of the eastern seashore themes as well as her recent studies of Florida waterscapes.
After meeting Richardson a couple of years ago, Ann Larsen, director of the Pasco Arts Council, invited her to exhibit at The Arts Center.
Open to the public, the Richardson exhibit is slated to begin Nov. 7 and run through Friday, Dec. 19. The hours are: from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; and from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Arts Center is adjacent to the Centennial Park Branch Library.
The Pasco Arts Council is supported in part by the Florida, Department of State's Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
