NEW PORT RICHEY - Progress Energy Art Gallery's annual member-artist exhibit opens June 6 with the gallery's First Friday artists' reception.
The yearly event allows current member artists to exhibit up to five pieces of original artwork.
The exhibit will include 15 artists with artwork featured by Ralph Annan, Eva Berman, Greg Colvin, Sunshine Sue Holland and Patrick Stickney.
For two months out of 10 the gallery wants to show what its members are capable of Karren Tolliver, gallery director, stated in a press release.
Without the support of the gallery's member-artists and others who donate to the not-for-profit gallery, there would be no art venue in downtown New Port Richey, Tolliver said.
New to the exhibit is an audiovisual piece, "The Soothsayer," by one of the galleries newest members. Christopher Constabile is a musician who specializes in ambient music.
Ambient music, a term usually attributed to Brian Eno, the British musician and producer who was a member of the 1970s and '80s art-rock band Roxy Music, includes atmospheric and environmental elements.
"The Soothsayer" is the first piece of its kind installed at the gallery. It involves four stereos and one television combined into one unit.
Each stereo is playing a CD containing an instrumental part of the music and played in unique duration. Constabile composed and performs each CD track.
Each CD is set to repeat, creating a variety of music as each independently replays itself.
The television displays stock footage of Mother Nature, at half speed, then in reverse at full speed. The image then repeats itself at different speeds and creates a pattern in varying degrees of colors and contrasts.
Constabile applied these video manipulations creating a unique piece of video art which unfolds on the television monitor to music.
In addition, the gallery will exhibit acrylic and oil paintings, ceramics, sculptures, photography and other works of various media.
Furthermore, Tolliver said, the annual exhibit is an opportunity for the gallery to show its members it appreciates them. It also gives them a venue in which they can exhibit their work without having to commit personal time and expenses, she said.
The exhibit begins June 6 and ends July 26.
