When John Noordover heard Denise Jackson sing at a karaoke bar, he knew he was listening to something special.

"She was so good I just said, 'You ought to be doing this for a living.' "

A few months later, Jackson is doing just that, and she is working for Noordover, the owner of Brew City, in New Port Richey.

"That's the American dream, doing something you love for a living," said Jackson, a former dental assistant and waitress.

Jackson has joined with seasoned performer Mark Burgess, who was appearing at Brew City as a solo.

The two have formed East of Eden, a name Burgess created when he performed years ago with various female singers at the Radisson Sand Key Resort, in Clearwater Beach.

Burgess accompanies Jackson on guitar with backup track and also sings.

He calls Jackson "a natural signer."

Burgess brings years of entertainment experience to East of Eden. The New Port Richey resident has been playing in the area since the 1980s.

In his early years in the entertainment world, he played bass for singer Neil Diamond and guitar for Sonny and Cher all in one night when the performers were in Tampa.

Later, he was in various bands, including the Inner Thoughts, then the house band at The Edge, in New Port Richey,

Most recently, he has been at Brew City playing solo guitar.

Burgess and Jackson immediately hit it off. "She's eclectic in what she can do," he said of the singer. "She has tastes beyond her years. She likes '80s and '90s stuff as well as new stuff."

He describes their music as pop rock encompassing music from the 1970s to the present. "We do everything from Bonnie Raitt, to Melissa Etheridge, to KT Tunstall."

Their chemistry rubs off on the audience, Burgess said. "We have a lot of fun together. It's infectious."

As for Jackson, she is living her dream. "If feel like I'm most me when I'm performing. Outside stresses melt away. It's just me and the music."
