Tackle shop roundup

One Stop Bait and Tackle, 727-842-5610: Three anglers trolling ballyhoo and black and gold Bomber plugs around the Dunedin Reef reported taking a few kings to 32 pounds. Anglers fishing just outside the Anclote River have been finding some reds to 28 inches, along with a few slot-sized fish to about 25 inches. Fish have been on oyster bars and around mangroves when the tide is up. Tarpon Spring artificial reef has been a good place to find mackerel. Fish have been running to 25 inches and taking spoons and live bait. There also have been bonito there, most no larger than 20 inches. Some flounder were taken at the reef, as well. The grass flats between Anclote Key and the Anclote power plant have been giving up spotted trout to about 20 inches. A few larger fish have been landed. Gulp Strips on jig heads have been a good bait, with root-beer the best color. The pier at the power plant has been giving up some mangrove snapper, with fish to 15 inches taking shrimp. A few anglers reported taking limits.

Salonika's Bait and Tackle, 727-849-6377: Anglers fishing around Green Key caught a couple of very large cobia on live shrimp and pinfish. The fish were swimming with rays in the shallow water just off the beach. Live shrimp fished around bars and mangroves in Salt Springs has been turning up reds 18 to 24 inches. Fish have been taken day and night. Some of the fish landed have been undersized, along with a few that were too big to keep.

Pier 60, 727-462-6466: Anglers fishing after dark are being rewarded with slot-sized trout. Fish have been taking shrimp or live sardines and topwater plugs well. A few oversized fish have been landed. An angler jumped a tarpon estimated at 100 pounds. The fish made a few big jumps before being brought to the base of the pier a cut loose. A few more tarpon were hooked, with live pinfish and large sardines the baits of choice.

Redington Long Pier, 727-391-9398: Trout fishing has been solid, with fish 17 to 20 inches common. Night fishing has been best, with shrimp and Loves tandem-rigged jigs working best. A few of the nicer fish were taken on topwater plugs fished around first light. A few reds have been hooked, but only a couple that fell in the keeper size range. Some to more than 30 inches have been landed or broken off. Shrimp fished on the bottom has been the ticket to success. A few flounder 14 to 17 inches are being caught on live shrimp fished on the bottom. Live sardines also are working.
