When we read an item that moved across the Associated Press wire Wednesday we were hit with a wave of confusion. Actually, that isn't all that surprising because the item dealt with newly approved legislation regarding health insurance. There is plenty of confusion in that sphere.
The news item said Gov. Charlie Crist was signing legislation that would allow insurers to offer scaled-down health insurance coverage in Florida. The law is intended to lower the cost of health insurance.
Many experts say states mandating coverage for things like mental health or chiropractic care has driven the cost of private insurance out of the range of many lower and even middle income consumers.
In Florida, there are about 50 of these coverage mandates on the statute books. The bill Crist signed would allow the sale of some policies that don't meet all of these coverage mandates. The confusing part of all this is that on Tuesday Crist signed legislation creating a new coverage mandate.
This bill forces insurers to pay for treatment for one of the most high-profile and troublesome disorders of the day, autism.
Alas, when it comes to paying for health care, not many people are thinking clearly these days - as we saw again this week.
