NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. -- Some 428 volunteers logged 150,000 miles to raise $150,000 for cancer research and patient services during the recent Relay for Life New Port Richey.
The benefit for American Cancer Society took place at Gulf High School where volunteers split into 46 relay teams, according to Risa Bright, publicity chair for the group.
"New Port Richey residents really showed their spirit," said Tina Shelton, co-chair for the Relay For Life New Port Richey 2008.
"The outstanding support received proves that the people of New Port Richey are truly committed to the fight against cancer," said Jamie Mick, co-chair of the Relay New Port Richey.
The teams represented area individuals, businesses, clubs and community organizations.
More than 100 cancer survivors participated in the opening lap and the survivor recognition.
