NEW PORT RICHEY - With the shaky economy these days, stamping out hunger could be an even bigger challenge this year, local postal worker Al Friedman told Pasco county commissioners this week.
So the Stamp Out Hunger food drive next Saturday, May 10, takes on even more importance, Friedman emphasized. He spoke on behalf of local members of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
He appealed for residents to help in the spirit of "neighbor helping neighbor." Lester Cypher, chief executive officer of the Volunteer Way food bank in New Port Richey, and Suzanne Isaacs, operations manager of Suncoast Harvest Food Bank in Land O' Lakes, joined Friedman in promoting the 15th annual event.
Plastic bags provided through Publix Supermarkets will show up soon on area mailboxes, Friedman explained. A cartoon by Family Circus artist Bil Keane will appear on the bags.
Then Pasco residents can fill the bags with at least one or two cans of food and leave the bags near their mailboxes for letter carriers to pick up on May 10.
Last time around, the local food drive brought in some 9,000 pounds of food, Friedman recalled. This year, demand has soared at local food banks, so letter carriers hope to collect even more canned goods.
