NEW PORT RICHEY -- Ever since 1937, when Jay B. Starkey Sr. acquired 16,000 of pastureland and started a ranch, the Starkey family has been one of Pasco County's leading benefactors, investing and reinvesting money, land and personal time to the betterment of the community.
Jay B. Starkey Jr. and wife Marsha recently continued that family tradition by pledging $1 million to the expansion of Morton Plant North Bay Hospital.
"Conserving the land and planning for future generations of Floridians has long been a part of our family's purpose," said Jay B. Starkey Jr. "By supporting West Pasco's only not-for-profit, community based hospital, we believe we are taking a new step in supporting a hospital that offers advanced, accessible health care for all residents."
Opened in 1965 as the county-owned West Pasco Hospital, Morton Plant North Bay Hospital is undergoing by far its largest expansion to date. The makeover will nearly double the size of the medical center at 6600 Madison St.
The first component of the project, a new parking lot north of the hospital off Forrest Avenue, was recently completed. Work is set to begin Monday on a three-story medical office building that will include a sleep disorders unit, outpatient rehabilitation and laboratory services.
Other parts of the project include renovation of the hospital emergency unit and the addition of a three-story patient wing with 34 private beds; a walk-in clinic; a community education facility; and new cardiac, respiratory, surgical and intensive care units.
A landscaped storm water retention area for the property is also part of the plan. The overall cost of the project is budgeted at $49 million is expected to be finished by late 2010.
The expansion is a major component of the Morton Plant Mease Foundation's 2nd Century Campaign. Its goal is raising $110 million over the next five years to preserve and enhance services at Morton Plant Mease Health Care medical centers.
In addition to North Bay Hospital, the Pinellas County-based not-for-profit health care organization operates Mease Countryside Hospital, Mease Dunedin Hospital and Morton Plant Hospital, in Clearwater.
"We are so grateful for the Starkeys' commitment to quality health care in Pasco County," John Couris, chief operating officer of Morton Plant North Bay Hospital, said. "This pledge is a great start to our 2nd Century Campaign to help fund our new Morton Plant North Bay Hospital."
