PORT RICHEY – Sod has been laid along the recently constructed entrance on U.S. 19 for Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park, but the construction project still has a long way to go.
Park Manager Toby Brewer and Charles Coe, the district parks manager, were inspecting the work so far on Tuesday. At first glance, the entrance might appear almost finished to motorists whizzing past on U.S. 19 north of Ridge Road.
In actuality, the entrance roadway goes about half a mile before abruptly ending in the woods, Brewer said in an interview today. "There's still a bit of work left to do on the first phase and then there is phase two," he said.
The second phase of construction will extend the pavement about another half a mile. The finished road will ferry visitors to a small picnic area with a restroom, plus a kayak launch on the water.
"I would say we are probably still a year away from having this opened," Brewer said.
