NEW PORT RICHEY - A $49 million expansion project will nearly double the size of the Morton Plant North Bay Hospital campus, with construction starting in earnest by the end of June.
The 122-bed hospital at 6600 Madison St. has gone through several transformations since it opened in 1965, as the county-owned West Pasco Hospital. Nothing as extensive as the latest metamorphosis, however, has ever taken place at the hospital, administrators indicate.
The first phase concentrated on site work and a new parking lot north of the hospital off Forest Avenue, according to a Morton Plant spokeswoman, Amy Morrow. The lot was completed earlier this month.
Construction of a three-story medical office building is next, scheduled to start by June 30, Morrow reports.
The office building will include physician offices, a new sleep disorders unit, laboratory services and outpatient rehabilitation services, Morrow explained.
Later on, the hospital will gain a three-story patient wing. Morrow said North Bay then can offer more private patient beds. Also coming off the drawing board will be an intensive care unit, cardiac unit, medical surgical unit, new respiratory care services and community education facilities.
A walk-in clinic will be added.
Renovations to the emergency room are in the works.
The inpatient Mitchell Rehabilitation Hospital, housed within North Bay, will be enlarged.
Construction could wrap up by late 2010, Morrow said.
