In his June 14 op-ed page column, "I'll take McCain and Second Amendment," Charley Reese discussed Barack Obama's voting record on the Second Amendment as grounds to vote for a presidential candidate who supports a billion-dollar war and wants to bomb Iran. This is a truly ignorant decision.
Obama, black as he may be, talks about the real issues affecting us: the economy, education, and a foreign dependency on oil. He supports education reform in areas that we need it most such as funding and revising the No Child Left Behind Act, which "punishes" schools that score low on comprehensive achievement tests.
We no longer live in an era in which owning guns is going to protect us from injustice in the White House, as Reese maintained. What matters is that we vote for the candidate who will allow America to educate its youth and to move forward.
Is it true, as Reese asserted, that racism still exists in America? Absolutely. Is it completely inappropriate and ignorant for a columnist to use race as a focal point of his argument in an article about why he is voting for the white candidate? Absolutely.
