TRINITY - Instead of just talking about overweight children, James P. Gills Family YMCA and All Children's Hospital decided to do something about it.
They are offering the summer program Fit4AllKids at the Gills YMCA at 8411 Photonics Drive in the Trinity area. Registration continues through the first session June 23.
"Almost every day we come across another report in the media about the growing problem of overweight children and teens," the Web site introduction states. Go to the All Children's Hospital Web site for information.
Fit4AllKids is designed for children 8 to 12 years old, a program spokeswoman, Kellie Gilmore, explains.
The youngsters strive to do their personal best to reach individual goals for weight loss, with a little help from their friends in the group. Along the way they also learn how to control weight once they reach the goal. Physical activity is one of the keys.
The Aug. 4 class, for example, is a healthy cooking class, "which is always a lot of fun," Gilmore said.
Every child in the program must have a physician referral. Financial assistance is available to families that qualify.
The classes here are scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. each Monday through Aug. 11.
"Our goal is to help children adopt and maintain a healthy weight and body size, and to be more active and fit," Gilmore commented.
