NEW PORT RICHEY-- Construction should start in earnest by the end of the month on the $49 million expansion plan for the 122-bed Morton Plant North Bay Hospital.

The project will nearly double the size of the hospital campus at 6600 Madison St., according to a Morton Plant spokeswoman, Amy Morrow.

The first phase concentrated on site work and construction of a parking lot north of the hospital, off Forest Avenue. The lot was completed earlier this month.

Construction of a three-story medical office building is next, slated for a June 30 start, Morrow reports.
The building will include physician offices, a new sleep disorders unit, laboratory services and outpatient rehabilitation services, Morrow explained.

Morton Plant North Bay Medical Arts Building, with 45,000 square feet, is intended to "improve doctor efficiency and provide easy access for patients," according to a bulletin from the developer, Orlando-based Lauth Property Group.

Later on, the hospital will gain a three-story patient wing. Morrow said North Bay then can offer more private patient beds. Also coming off the drawing board will be an intensive care unit, cardiac unit, medical surgical unit, new respiratory care services and community education facilities.

A walk-in clinic is also planned.

Renovations to the emergency room are in the works.

The inpatient Mitchell Rehabilitation Hospital, housed within North Bay, will be enlarged.

The project includes a storm-water retention area.

Construction could wrap up by late 2010, Morrow said. The contractor for the hospital upgrades is Brasfield & Gorrie LLC, based in Orlando.
