NEW PORT RICHEY -- It is, after all a small world, until creativity opens the doors of a young mind.
The Progress Energy Art Gallery, in downtown New Port Richey is offering a full range of art classes this summer for ages 7 and older.
The gallery is reaching out to children in the community who could benefit from attending these sessions and is seeking benefactors to fund scholarships for those who cannot afford the fees, which range from $30 upward to $100 depending on the class.
The gallery's director, Karren Tolliver, said, "for a small, tax-deductible donation, people can provide a priceless gift to a child that can last a lifetime."
The gallery is contacting local organizations to assist with matching students to the scholarships.
The gallery is taking enrollment for the classes, which last until August.
The curriculum offers courses lasting from 50 minutes to three-hour sessions, which are given over a period of days.
In addition to art oriented classes the gallery is offering "garden art" classes where the student will create art projects for their home.
The musically challenged or musically alike can learn to play the cedar flute. The ancient "love flute" uses 5-hole pentatonic scale and produces a harmonious sound. Traditional music training or music memorizing is not required to play it.
Those who want to donate the price of a class can send their donations to the gallery or deliver it in person. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 8 p.m.
The Progress Energy Art Gallery is a community gallery that was opened by the not-for-profit organization Greater New Port Richey Main Street with a grant from Progress Energy to encourage the growth of art and culture in our downtown.
All proceeds from sales go toward keeping this valuable asset to the community operational. A number of sponsorship opportunities are available for the gallery. All donations are tax-deductible.
