NEW PORT RICHEY - Cats and kittens are looking for a home as more and more felines wait for adoption at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Suncoast.
The feline shelter at the SPCA Suncoast, called the Kitty Cabana, is full, according to Lia Gallegos, an SPCA spokeswoman.
More and more unwanted cats have wound up at the no-kill shelter, according to Director Martha Murray.
SPCA staff members a few weeks ago had discovered some kittens left in a large trash bin, so the animals were taken in.
The number of adoptions has gone up as well, Gallegos notes.
Even so, SPCA had about 20 cats and kittens ready for adoption as of Friday. Each cat has been vaccinated, as well as spayed or neutered.
But many more cats remain in quarantine until they can be scheduled for surgery before being put up for adoption. Some kittens as well as puppies, however, are too young for surgery, so SPCA is looking for foster families to put up the animals for a short time, Gallegos explains.
The next foster care classes will take place at 10 a.m. this Saturday, June 14, and 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12.
Foster parents will be provided with free training, food and any necessary medications. "All that is required is a safe environment, a little time, plenty of love and attention," Gallegos said.
Foster care provider applications are available at the shelter, 7734 Congress St. Or call Karen Scully at 727-849-1048 during regular business hours, Wednesday through Sunday, from noon to 6 p.m. Send e-mail inquiries to info@SPCAsuncoast.org or go online to www.SPCAsuncoast.org>.
