NEW PORT RICHEY – An all-terrain vehicle has proved its worth by helping find a boy recently lost in woods near Hudson, a Pasco Sheriff's Office official said.
Sgt. Brett Landsberg helped demonstrate several additions to the Sheriff's Office Missing Abducted Child Team – usually called MAC for short – Wednesday morning.
Det. Richard Scilex got behind the wheel of the all-terrain 6-by-6 vehicle and showed how it is capable of covering the worst terrain and wooded areas.
The vehicle and towing trailer were donated to the Pasco Sheriff's Office.
The MAC Team also showed new features of the Sheriff's Office Web site that let the news media and the public download photos, videos and other information about missing children when the MAC team is activated.
The MAC team unveiled its mobile headquarters, in April 2007. The recreational vehicle and its special gear were purchased with approximately $160,000 donated from throughout Pasco County.
The Sheriff's Office Juvenile and Sex Offender Investigation Unit spearheaded the fundraising drive.
An abducted child's chances of survival greatly decrease after the first three hours, statistics show.
The MAC mobile command center is intended to reduce the time it takes to distribute bulletins and other information to residents.
