Guide bites
Dunedin Bait and Tackle, 727-736-3474 : Anglers have been working the northern side of the Dunedin Causeway and taking trout to 20 inches or better. Live shrimp and Gulp Strips on jigs have been working well Trout fishing has been good at the southwestern end of Honeymoon Island, as well, with fish 18 to 20 inches taking shrimp and jigs. Pet Beach has been giving up some pompano 11 to 13 inches, and one angler landed a permit of 22 inches.
Dunedin Fishin Center, 727-738-5628: The western side of Caladesi Island, off Dunedin, has been holding some snook, from undersized fish to nearly 40 inches. Fish are taking live shrimp and plugs, with all being released because of the closed season. A number of tarpon have been jumped on the southern side of Honeymoon Island, with fish 120 to 150 pounds taking live pass crabs and sardines.
Hart's One Stop, 727-938-5364: An angler stopped in the shop to report taking a couple of trout to 20 inches and a 22-inch red fishing just off the western beach at Howard Park, in Tarpon Springs. He used shrimp and root-beer colored Gulp Strips. The northern end of Three Rooker Bar has been producing a few trout to 20 inches on live shrimp and jigs. The northern end of Anclote Key has been a good trout spot. Fish have been in 5 to 8 feet of water and taking shrimp, jigs and live sardines.
One Stop Bait and Tackle, 727-842-5610: The small islands off the Anclote River have been holding some reds to 24 inches. Shrimp and jigs with Gulp Strips have been working well. Some small snook have been taken around the islands, as well. An angler reported landing two bonefish at Hurricane Pass while fishing a Doc's Goofy Jig tipped with shrimp, Bonefish are a rare catch this far north. Anglers fishing 35 feet of water west of Anclote Key connected with a couple of kings to 20 pounds. The flats around the stilt houses north of the Cotee River gave up a couple of cobia, though both fish landed were just shy of legal. Blacktip sharks have been around the north tip of Anclote Key, with most fish 2 to 3 feet, but one that was landed and measured 5 feet. Chunks of bonito have been a good bait, though some were taken on shrimp.
Pier 60, 727-462-6466: A few mackerel 12 to 16 inches are being landed in the mornings. Shrimp and live sardines are working well, but some have been caught on Gotcha Plugs or spoons. Mangrove snapper are running 12 to 15 inches and taking shrimp on the bottom. A few sheepshead to about the same size are being landed. Tarpon have been rolling around the pier and some are being hooked. A 40-pound fish was landed and released. Whiting have been around in good numbers, with angler taking fish 10 to 13 inches on shrimp. Some have been leaving with buckets full of fish.
Redington Long Pier, 727-391-9398: Tarpon anglers have been jumping fair numbers of fish to 90 pounds fishing live bait. Pompano fishin has been solid, but the larger fish are 11 to 13 inches. Yellow and white Doc's Goofy Jigs tipped with shrimp have been best. Bonito have been schooling around the pier at times, and snook have been a good bet at night, though they are out of season and must be released.
Tarpon Tom's, 727-938-2379: The northern side of the Dunedin Causeway has been a good trout spot. Fish to 20 inches have been taking shrimp and jigs. Donnie from the shop was fishing with his wife at Pet Beach, where they took whiting to 13 inches and some pompano to 12 inches. They used Silly Willy jigs with frozen shrimp tippers. The back of Caladesi Island has been holding snook to 35 inches. Most have been tight to the mangroves and taking live sardines or shrimp when they are biting, but most fish seen have not been biting well.
