DADE CITY -- With record gasoline prices, the county should discourage its workers from guzzling gas by idling cars for long periods of time, a Land O' Lakes man told the County Commission today.
"Go Green Turn Off Your Machine" is the slogan suggested by Jay Magner, who spoke during the public comment period at Tuesday's commission meeting.
Not only does idling waste gas, Magner said, it also damages the environment.
Even as some people complain about high gasoline prices, they will waste gas waiting in the car with the engine running as a family member shops, Magner complained. Or a parent will idle a car for a long time while waiting to pick up a child from school, he said.
Some county workers also have developed this bad habit, Magner believes.
Magner compared the environmental benefits of an anti-idling campaign to efforts to get people to turn off the water while brushing their teeth.
County Administrator John Gallagher said his staff had written a memo on idling and motor fuel consumption after Magner contacted the county. The Pasco Public Works Department is instituting a no-idling policy, Gallagher said.
