Charley Reese hit the nail right on the head in his column about "the swimmer of Massachusetts."
It was amazing that in 1969, when it happened, the media completely ignored that fact of Ted Kennedy willfully walked away from helping Mary Jo Kopechne out of that car. It all boils down to his family's influence on the political front.
Looking back on all the tragic things in that family, I honestly think its patriarch, Joseph P. Kennedy, made a deal with the devil back in the 1930s, when he was running illegal booze trucks across Massachusetts.
