HOLIDAY -- What to wear, what to wear? So you don't have a thing in your closet to wear to that special function?
The Pasco Arts Council, in conjunction with Convergence 2008, an international conference being held throughout Tampa Bay June 25 - 28 is featuring "Plumage: Redefining What We Wear," an exhibition of wearable creations.
The exhibit is open to the public from June 12 through July 3 with the opening reception and informal fashion show Friday, June 13 from 5 to 7 p.m.
According to Ann Larsen, Pasco Arts Council executive director, Convergence 2008 is being celebrated through gallery and museum exhibits with over 200 workshops, seminars and lectures presented by experts from around the world.
The biennial event is sponsored by the Handweavers Guild of America, and hosted this year by Florida Tropical Weavers Guild, Larsen said.
The guild, which is in Odessa, educates the public on the art and craft of weaving, spinning and basketry.
A local designer, Diane Prekup created one-of-a-kind, fiber art "wearables" specifically for the Plumage show.
Prekups creations are assembled with yarns, thread, bamboo, ribbons, silk, nylon and velvet. She does not utilize needles, hooks or a loom in creating the web-like array of materials.
Prekup's focus is color and texture when producing the unique fabrics.
An Art Director for 15 years, Prekup has transcended from working with hot glass to fabrics and fibers.
Prekup has been perfecting her craft for five years and maintains a studio in Pasco County.
She is a frequent exhibitor at the Pasco Arts Council.
Her designs are shown in galleries and available to purchase at boutiques from New York to Laguna Beach.
Prekup received the People's Choice Award in 2007 at the Uncommon Threads Fashion Show, in Chicago. She is a member of Florida Craftsman, Handweavers Guild of America and American Craft Council.
