NEW PORT RICHEY -- No, he's not Randy Jackson, "American Idol" judge - although he has met that Jackson while touring.
But the Randy Jackson who is guitarist and a founding member of the band Zebra can stake a claim in the musical achievement department. The group's self-titled 1983 debut album went gold, making it what was then the fastest selling debut album in the considerable history of Atlantic Records.
Since then, the hard rock trio has sold more than 2 million video and audio recordings.
Zebra will be in New Port Richey this Saturday, June 7. It will headline the celebration of Bourbon Street Night Club's 10th anniversary in Pasco County.
People often associate Zebra with loud music, but that's a limited characterization, Jackson noted. "We're a lot of different styles, from heavy guitar and drums and loud, high vocals, to lullabies with piano and strings and mellow throughout."
When compared to some of their fellow rockers, their behavior is conservative, said Jackson. "We don't curse and act crazy. We've always shied away from that."
After about 30 years of performing together, members are comfortable with one another. "We get along. We're kind of like family," Jackson explained.
Along with playing together as a band, they also have individual gigs.
It was on one of those, while doing a reunion tour with Jefferson Airplane, that Jackson met one of the other musical Randy Jacksons - despite what many people think the "America Idol" Randy Jackson was not once a member of the of Jackson Five - who was auditioning as a bass player at the time.
New Orleans native Jackson is Zebra's lead guitarist and vocalist. Guy Gelso is on drums; and Felix Hanemann, bass and keyboards.
Jackson expects the band to continue. "The music on its own has held up."
