TRINITY - Where in the world is Genoa?
Members of West Pasco Rotary clubs can tell you the seaside city lies along the northwestern coast of Italy after they recently played host to an Italian Rotary exchange group.
Stefano Piola, Germana Casaccia, Elisa Fois, Silvia Caffa and Maria Carola Morozzo spoke about their time here during an appearance at Rotary Club of Trinity.
Hosts were the families of Bob Memoli of Seven Springs Rotary, Vinny Buscetta of Holiday Rotary, Karen Graves of Keystone Rotary, Patricia Ferrari of Hudson Rotary and Kathyrn "Kat" Sille of Trinity Rotary.
Sille said her children were sorry to see Morozzo go. It was the first time the Sille family had acted as a Rotary host family. She and husband Robby have four children, Austin, Braydon, Claudia and Wolf, ranging in ages from 8 to 19.
Morozzo, a naval architect, said she had fun teaching the Sille children some basic Italian words, such as arrivederci.
The Italian visitors squeezed in some shopping trips because of more purchasing power at this time, Buscetta observed.
The euro is worth more against the dollar, giving the overseas guests a bonus of perhaps 20 percent in buying power.
Another Rotary member observed how gasoline in Italy was selling for the equivalent of $11.30 a gallon during a recent trip overseas. Americans are grousing about gasoline approaching the $4-a-gallon mark here.
Carol Kinnard, president of Trinity Rotary, reflected upon the time she had lived in Italy in 1971 and 1972.
One thing that always struck her was how much more trash Americans abroad had produced than Italian residents.
She estimated U.S. citizens might throw out three times as much garbage.
Upon departing, the Italians might have bid "arrivederci" to their hosts - farewell until we meet again.
