The closing of the Fred Howard Park causeway and beach for bridge reconstruction should be unacceptable to the residents of Pinellas County and Tarpon Springs.
The county Public Works Department could have designed a bridge project that respected the rights of the public. It could at least provide access to the beach for pedestrians, joggers, bicycles, strollers with babies, wind surfers, fishermen and the many thousands of people who use and enjoy this causeway. This beach and causeway are used by students who will be out of school next summer and have no local beach for a hang-out.
Why doesn't the county build one bridge from September 2008 to March 2009 and then open up the beach and causeway for the summer? It could then build the second bridge from September 2009 to April 2010.
There are most likely other, better, solutions rather than keeping the residents off the beach for one year straight, which is unacceptable. We go out to the beach almost every evening just to watch the sunsets and get some fresh air like many others.
Please keep the beach and causeway open to the residents during construction.
