NEW PORT RICHEY -- You can't beat the heat, especially if you're green and leafy.
Greater New Port Richey Main Street has announced that in order to prevent wilted vegetables and people, its Downtown Farmers Market will be open from 9 a.m. through noon beginning this Saturday, July 12. This schedule will run through Sept. 6.
"It is unanimous among the vendors and the customers that we want the market to be year-round, but to accommodate for the heat the market will close at noon," said Main Street Executive Director Judy DeBella Thomas. "Come fall we will be back to normal."
The farmers market, held every Saturday at Cavalaire Square, near the intersection of Main Street and Grand Boulevard, opened April 26. Its hours of operation had been from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
The opening was timed to coincide just as many other similar type markets shut down for the summer. The hope was that vendors from those markets would come over to the new venue and help establish it during the off-season.
The market opened with about a dozen vendors selling produce, plants and specialty items. From the beginning, Thomas said the market would be a work-in-progress; that it will evolve based on what the vendors and customers indicate they want.
Fresh market vendor spaces are available, at a cost of $10 per week. For more information, go to the Greater New Port Richey Main Street href=http://www.nprmainstreet.com> Web site, click on "events", then "vendor applications," or call 727-842-8066.
