NEW PORT RICHEY -- Greater New Port Main Street will honor Rose Mohr of the Market on Main with its quarterly Award of Excellence.
Mohr will receive the award 11:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, at the market, 6040 Main Street, east of Madison Street.
The award is given by Main Street's Design Team, which is comprised of volunteers Karen Traetow, Chair; Keith Elam, Charlie Skelton, Jeannine Humphrey, Ann Moore and Tom Pape.
The Design Team is one of the committees that comprise the Main Street Four Point Program, along with economic restructuring, organization and promotion.
The four points are necessary components for a complete Main Street program, which is dedicated to the revitalization, historic preservation and improving economic vitality in downtown districts.
The Award of Excellence recognizes the improvements made to the exterior of business and how such makeovers help lure commerce to the downtown district.
Prior recipients include Juan's Black Bean Cafe; David A. Dorsey, CPA; Richey Suncoast Theatre; Fitzgerald's; and Vincenzo's Restaurant.
The Market on Main, a produce and gifts and cards store, is a perfect example of what the Design Team is looking for in a business when presenting the Award of Excellence, Judy De Bella Thomas, executive director of Greater New Port Richey Main Street, said.
Mohr has gone beyond improving the building; she has brought added business to the downtown district, DeBella Thomas said.
Mohr relocated her business to the downtown district from the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Madison Street, after the business was destroyed by a fire last year.
After consulting with DeBella Thomas, Mohr decided the 840-square-foot building on Main Street, east of Madison Street, would best suit her needs.
"I didn't want to leave the area," Mohr said and added that "I love the downtown area."
Once Mohr saw the building she knew that she could expand her produce business into her ultimate goal of creating a country store.
It was a natural evolution given the nature of the building and saw the potential to increase business due to the atmosphere of the building, which is actually a wooden framed house built in 1924.
Mohr has improved the building by adding an outside deck where she displays fresh produce, stained the floors and added mulch to the adjoining lot that customers can use for parking.
The former single-family house was converted to a business in the late 1990s and previously was home for a time to the Potting Shed garden shop.
DeBella Thomas commended Mohr for her involvement in activities Greater New Port Richey Main Street promotes, such as the Saturday Farmers Market and the quarterly Shop 'N' Stroll events. DeBella Thomas also cites Mohr's involvement with Main Street's Business Owners Association.
